Tenas Project mine

Tenas Project

The Tenas project is a steelmaking coal project in British Columbia, Canada.

Bathurst completed the purchase of the Tenas project in December 2023, making it the second long-life Canadian steelmaking coal project in which Bathurst has an interest. The other is the Crown Mountain joint-venture project located at Elk Valley, also in British Columbia, Canada.

Located in the Bulkley Nechako region, 7 km southwest of Telkwa, British Columbia, Tenas will be an open-pit mine aiming to produce 750,000 tonnes of saleable steelmaking coal annually, with a low strip ratio. The expected mine life is 25 years, including the construction, operations, and reclamation phases. We are forecasting first production from the mine in FY27. We are currently working on the Environmental Assessment process, and on this closely with indigenous peoples.

Once operational the mine will employ more than 100 staff directly and 200 indirectly within the local community.

The project is situated close to the deep-water port of Trigon Pacific Terminals (formally Ridley Port), which is near Prince Rupert. It will have access to existing road and rail infrastructure already developed by the local forestry industry. The mine is expected to be one of the lowest-cost producers of metallurgical coal on the global seaborne market.
